THE CHARACTER OF A GOOD SHEPHERD: 1 Timothy 3:1-5, Titus 1:8

INTRODUCTION: It is required that a Christian steward possesses a high level of moral character. This means that, he must have the clear mindset to serve rather than to look at the honour and advantage of his office. In John 13:12-15 – our Lord and master did set the example for us by washing his apostles’ feet. He instructs as also to do the same. In this study we consider some of the qualities that Apostle Paul identifies for stewards.

MEMORY VERSE: Matthew 20:26

Discuss the following study questions.

(a) What should be the mindset of the steward/leader/shepherd based on our memory verse?
(b) How does this compare with what we see in the church today?
(c) List the various qualities of an overseer/steward in the passage.
(d) Briefly explain what each means.
(e) How will each positively or negatively affect the work of the steward?
(f) The only gift or ability mentioned in v2 is the ability to teach. Why is character exalted over abilities.
(g) Note the importance Apostle Paul attaches to family life in V2a,4-5. In this age of easy divorce in the church,
single parent homes and attacks on the family, how can the church be an example to society.

CONCLUSION:

According to Philippians 2:5-8, every steward must have the same attitude as Jesus Christ who stripped himself of all privileges and rights and humbled himself to the place of a slave. The steward must live blamelessly and have qualities that will positively influence the discharge of his duties.
